At least 9 people have died and another 98 are receiving medical treatment from a cholera outbreak at an IDP camp in Maiduguri, according to a health worker speaking with SaharaReporters. Maiduguri is the capital of Borno State and is now the location of the military headquarters to facilitate Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram.
The cholera outbreak occurred at Sanda Kyari Internally Displaced Persons camp in Maiduguri, where hundreds of people are stricken with the disease.
A medic at the camp told SaharaReporters that ”we started recording the cholera outbreak on the 9th of this month. Initially we had 119 cases but 9 of them have died. At least 98 people are being treated so far.”
He added ”we have placed restrictions of movement in the camp then we have started education programs in the camps so that people know the danger associate with [the outbreak].”
Another health worker speaking to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity said ” the condition of these camps is bad, what did you expect? People have been sleeping in classrooms for months without mosquito nets. The situation here is worrisome, I think the government can still do more to improve the welfare of internal displaced persons.”
